Jacob had his 2 year check-up today and is 24 pounds (10th percentile) and 33 1/2 inches (25th percentile). Ah, my little peanut. The doctor was happy with everything we told her - good eater, good sleeper, going potty like a big boy (he went again yesterday), being nice to his brother, talking up a storm, etc.
As he gets older, he is much more aware of what is happening at these appointments. When I laid him on the table to get measured, he looked a bit apprehensive. He was also quite fascinated when the doctor listened to his heart and looked in his ears. Maybe he was making the connection that he has the same instruments in his toy doctor kit. We did do a little 'practice' this morning. He only had to get one shot and a finger poke today and now doesn't go back until he is 3. That is going to be strange.
Just to prove how little he is, here he is wearing Isaac's outfit. He found it one day and just HAD to wear it. However, he did NOT want me to take his picture. I got him as he was running. He is so funny!

Tonight we gave Isaac his first taste of rice cereal. He wasn't sure what to make of it at first. I love the face he made when he got the first taste! By the end he seemed to enjoy it more and had figured out how to swallow a bit better.

The last couple times I gave Isaac a bath in his little tub in the sink he has gotten me completely drenched. I knew it was time to graduate him to the big tub (still in his little tub, though). It seems like Jacob figured out the whole splashing thing a whole lot earlier, but maybe not. Sometimes my memory fails me. Anyway, tonight I thought, 'Why not just bathe the boys together?' It didn't go horribly, but I will not attempt it anytime soon and certainly not without Alan's assistance.
Things started out pretty calm. Of course Jacob was super curious and wanted to help with washing Isaac.
Then things started to get a little crazy. Jacob started splashing and Alan whistled to get Jacob's attention focused toward the camera. It was pretty loud in there! Its very echo-y in that bathroom since it doesn't have any rugs yet. You can already tell by Isaac's face that he is not enjoying this much.
About three minutes after the bath started, Isaac lost it.

Ah well. Live and learn, right? It was probably the shortest bath the boys have ever gotten, but at least they were clean!
A while back we bought one of those potty ring inserts that fits on the toilet just to get him used to the idea. About a week and a half ago he started getting interested in it and asking us to use it. Nothing would actually happen. He just sat there, but it was a start. This morning he was saying something to me, but I couldn't really understand him. I asked him to repeat it and he went by the bathroom door and said it again. I figured out he was saying 'potty'. Sometimes you have to know the context to understand the word he is saying. :P I took him in and got him on the toilet totally figuring this would be like every other time where we would just hang out in the bathroom for a while. Nope! As soon as I sat him down he made a funny face and I heard the tinkle, tinkle. I was so surprised! At first I didn't even really believe it, but as soon as I knew it was true I made a huge deal about it. I pretty much sounded like an idiot! He didn't ask again all day long and then in the evening he asked to go potty, but nothing happened - until he got in the bathtub two minutes later where he proceeded to go in the tub. Of course! This may have been a total fluke, but at least I know he is kind of getting it. Yay for Jacob!
Yesterday we took the boys to the beach to celebrate Jacob's birthday. We left right after lunch with the hopes that the boys would nap on the way there. Worked like a charm! They were both sound asleep before we even hit San Bernardino and they slept until we got off the freeway in Manhattan Beach. Perfect!
When we got out of the car, Jacob looked at the ocean and yelled, 'Wawee! Wawee!' (his word for water). Yup. Big water!

Jacob also liked watching some middle school boys playing with a volleyball. He thought that was pretty cool! When they left he said, 'Buh-bye. See you'. So hilarious!
Isaac had a lot of fun just hanging out on the blanket. I did take him down to the water a couple times to dip his feet in and he enjoyed it until the waves crashed too high up on his legs. The water was pretty cold!

There is an aquarium at the end of the pier at Manhattan Beach, so after we loaded up all our beach junk, we went for a walk up the pier to check it out. There were a couple tanks where you could touch the creatures with one finger, but Jacob wanted no part of that!

Then we met our friends Scott and Megan at The Counter in El Segundo for some yummy burgers. Right when the food came, Isaac decided he didn't want to sit in his seat anymore. We always joke that he smells the food and starts to cry! I tried to eat with him on my lap, but that is impossible these days. He is so grabby!
After Megan finished her meal, she took Isaac so I could eat. I missed getting a picture of him giving her big, sloppy kisses all over her face.
After dinner we drove over to Whole Foods to get Jacob some milk. Alan ran in while I changed the boys into their jammies. While Jacob drank his milk, I fed Isaac and then we took off for home. Within 15 minutes, both boys were sound asleep again. YAY!
We didn't get home until almost 9:00, so it was a long day, but a very fun one!
Today we had Jacob's birthday party and he had a LOT of fun! For lunch Alan grilled pork tenderloin and we served it with a mustard bbq sauce. We also had grilled corn on the cob with a seasoned butter and mustardy cole slaw made with cabbage and carrots from our garden. Yum-O! After Jacob got up from his nap he came outdoors to play. His uncles always come up with some fun things to do.
When my mom came out with the bag-o-gifts, Jacob was very excited! Guess he figured out what presents are all about. :P And how to open them.

Books - Jacob loves these My First board books. For his birthday he got Word, Number and Farm. He read them all evening and kept pointing and yelling at the pictures he saw.

His Uncle Mike got him a garden tool set. Alan has a little 3'x3' garden plot ready for Jacob to plant some of his own veggies since he loves to be in the garden so much. Now that he's got his tools, he can get planting!
My mom made a super delicious chocolate cake for Jacob and we made some homemade vanilla ice cream with toffee bits. We were going to light the candle, but it was a little too breezy for that and we had a hard time getting Jacob to even stand by the cake. He just wanted to play! Alan sat him on the table so we could get a picture and right away Jacob grabbed that candle. Good thing it wasn't lit!

We had such a fun day and tomorrow we plan to head out to the beach to celebrate some more!

I am surrounded by sick-os. Alan and the boys have colds. What is up with these summer colds? It seems the boys just got over colds! Grrrr
I hope Isaac sleeps better than he did last night. He was all stuffed up and slept best in a propped up position, so I was up with him most of the night. I tried sleeping on the couch with him, but I just couldn't sleep so I watched some late night TV while he snored away. I did end up going back upstairs around 3:30 and got a couple hours of sleep. I was pretty sleepy today and the days where we stay home all day long just seem to last forever! I try to come up with fun things to do to keep everyone from going stir crazy. Yesterday we built a fort out of the desk in the living room and today I let Jacob play in the sprinklers. He had a blast getting completely drenched!
Isaac likes to play on the floor, but the toys often get out of reach. He's very wild when he plays. I am amazed at how far he can throw things! My solution is to fill a box with a bunch of toys and set it on its side in front of him. That way the toys stay sort of corralled and I can get a few things done. Of course, this only works if Jacob isn't around. I can't leave the two of them alone.
Lately he has been sucking on his bottom lip. This reminds me so much of Jacob! I think for the first month of his life we hardly ever saw his bottom lip!

Jacob got creative this afternoon and wanted Isaac to sit in the toy crate. Isaac had so much fun with all the toys Jacob threw in there for him!
We had a visitor the other night. I was already in bed and heard Homer just going bonkers, barking and scratching. He usually barks at people walking past the house, but this time he was on the other side of the house, so I wasn't sure what was going on. Alan came up later to tell me that there was a possum on the fence and it was not phased by Homer trying to get it. This of course was driving Homer nuts-o!
I think possums have to be one of the ugliest animals EVER!
The other day at lunch Jacob wiped his hands in his hair. I think he was eating gnocchi with pesto so his hair got all goopy. Later, Alan decided to use it as a styling gel and give Jacob a fauxhawk.

Isaac has this funny long piece of hair that looks a bit like a comb-over. Yesterday it was sticking straight up with a bit of a curl to it.
It seems like the boys are learning new things every day!
Jacob will be 2 on the 17th. Hard to imagine! In the past month or so, his vocabulary has just exploded! He says tons and tons of words now and learns new ones all the time. He repeats everything we say! He's starting to say a lot of 2 word phrases too - 'bye-bye, Daddy', 'night-night, Daddy', 'baby I-Yi', 'help me' and the list goes on.
We have the book 'Sheep in a Jeep' and the first part goes 'Beep. Beep. Sheep in a jeep on a hill that's steep. Uh-oh. The jeep won't go.' Jacob started saying, 'Uh-oh. Jeep on't go.' Yesterday during boot camp we were running through the neighborhood surrounding the park and we saw a couple guys working on their car. As we passed by Jacob said, 'Uh-oh. Jeep on't go!' I was just amazed that he made that connection. I love it! He's really starting to make more and more of those connections. He'll notice when he and Isaac are wearing the same color diaper. The other day I put a yellow one on him and he pointed to Isaac who was also wearing a yellow one and said, 'Ye-Yo.' So far the only color he can name is yellow. Must be his favorite or something. :D
Jacob is all about the outdoors - being outdoors and looking outdoors. He also LOVES his bike and wants to ride it all the time. This is what I hear pretty much all day long
Since Jacob likes to look out the window so much I moved his step stool to the picture window. I was getting tired of holding him all the time so he could watch the cars go by. :P

Isaac will be 5 months old on the 9th and he is learning lots of new stuff too. His latest achievement is sitting up! He still isn't completely stable, but is doing great at being able to correct himself when he leans too far to one side. Earlier this week he would just topple over.
Isaac loves to play with toys. He gets pretty wild sometimes! When he gets like that we have to take away the hard toys because he bops himself on the head. He now sits in his highchair while we eat and he loves that. It won't be too much longer and we can start him on some solid foods. I can't believe he is that old already!
Isaac also loves the outdoors. Today he was cranky after one of his naps and since the weather was so nice I decided to take the boys out for a while. Isaac stopped being a crab as soon as he got on his blanket to play.

Jacob loves to help! He helps Alan pick veggies in the garden (mostly 'matoes so he can eat them) and he helps me unload the dishwasher and pick up his toys before bedtime. He loves his new Mr. Potato Head and after we pack him up in the box Jacob says, 'Night-night 'Tato'.
Today he helped me rake up the pine needles.

I was playing with Isaac on the blanket when I heard Jacob grunting in frustration. I looked over and he had pulled his pool up to the hose, but couldn't get the hose pulled out far enough to reach the pool. I pulled the hose out for him so he could pretend to fill up the pool.
Hey! Where's the water! He wasn't too thrilled that he had to pretend. He wanted to fill it up for real.
I could go on and on about all the cool and cute stuff Jacob and Isaac have been doing lately, but I'll spare you. They are both at such fun ages where they get such a kick out of discovering their world.
